A call has been made to accelerate infrastructure development plans in one of Bahrain’s busiest constituencies once regional tensions ease.
Parliament’s foreign affairs, defence and national security committee chairman and Capital Governorate Constituency Four MP Dr Hassan Bukhammas said the recent regional turmoil, including Iranian aggression targeting Bahrain, highlighted the importance of strengthening infrastructure readiness in strategic urban areas.
“Despite the difficult regional circumstances we are witnessing, planning for development must not slow down,” Dr Bukhammas said.
“Our constituency – which includes Juffair, Adliya, Umm Al Hassam, Ghuraifa and Abu Ghazal – is one of the most densely populated and economically active areas in Bahrain. All infrastructure projects planned until 2030 must be fully prepared so that implementation can begin immediately once the current turmoil ends.”
Mr Bukhammas, who lives in the Al Fateh district in Juffair, stressed that strengthening infrastructure would support economic recovery, improve services for residents and businesses, and enhance the kingdom’s overall resilience.
“Forward planning is critical,” he said. “Work on projects related to roads, drainage and sewage networks should start without delay once conditions stabilise, ensuring that development momentum continues.”
Works Minister Ebrahim Al Hawaj confirmed that several major infrastructure developments have already been completed in recent years as part of the government’s broader strategy to support urban expansion and improve services across the Capital Governorate.
“The ministry remains committed to strengthening Bahrain’s infrastructure network in line with urban growth and economic development,” Mr Al Hawaj said during the Parliament session held remotely yesterday.
Among the projects completed recently is a comprehensive sewage network in Juffair Block 324, which was finalised in July 2025 at a cost of BD3.47 million.
Major road projects have also been delivered to ease congestion, including the redevelopment of roads in Juffair Block 324, which introduced upgraded internal road networks, stormwater drainage systems, service ducts for utilities, improved street lighting and pedestrian facilities.
Mr Al Hawaj said additional projects included in the 2025-2026 budget would further enhance traffic flow and services within constituency four, noting that detailed designs for several schemes had already been completed pending final approvals.
Meanwhile, major infrastructure projects worth millions of dinars are being rolled out across several villages in the Northern Governorate to support rapidly growing communities, according to Mr Al Hawaj.
The schemes cover sanitation networks, roads, stormwater drainage and facility upgrades in Northern Governorate Constituency 12, which includes Karzakan, Saddad, Malkiya, Shahrakan and Luzi and is represented by MP Hanan Fardan.
“The sewage network coverage across the Northern Governorate has reached approximately 69 per cent, while coverage in Constituency 12 stands at about 53pc,” Mr Al Hawaj said.
He noted that several sanitation projects had already been completed, while others were under implementation or in the tendering stage.
“Projects worth around BD4.3 million are underway in the constituency,” he said. “There is more coming in co-ordination with the Northern Municipal Council.”
However, Ms Fardan replied residents were eager to see faster progress.
“Thousands of families in these villages are waiting for the completion of key infrastructure services,” she said. “Slow work on some projects is affecting daily life, and we hope implementation will accelerate.”
In addition to sanitation works, road construction projects worth BD8.13m are being implemented across the constituency, with a further BD1.7m allocated for road rehabilitation and maintenance in 2026 and 2027.
