A DANISH traveller who is on a journey across the world without taking a single flight is making his way to Bahrain.
Torbjorn Pedersen, known as Thor, started his journey from Denmark on October 10, 2013.
So far he has travelled to 153 countries and plans to visit a total of 203 nations without taking a single flight.
Mr Pedersen, a 39-year-old with a background in logistics, will arrive in Bahrain this afternoon from Dammam, Saudi Arabia.
“I travel by public transportation, most often by bus or train,” he told the GDN. “Sometimes I take ferries and when I have no other option I board a container ship.”
He is set to cross King Fahad Causeway and plans to spend two nights in Bahrain.
“I have visited 153 countries without flying or returning home, including Saudi Arabia,” he said. “Bahrain will become number 154, and my friend and I will drive from Dammam to Manama over the causeway.”
His plans in Bahrain include a presentation with Maersk Line, a container shipping company, in addition to a traditional dinner.
“On the second day, I will meet the Bahrain Red Crescent Society as I am a goodwill ambassador of the Danish Red Cross,” he added.
“I will also take a picture of the sunset and a picture of someone’s eye – I do that in every country.
“The only reason I could reach Bahrain now is because a friend from the UAE is driving me in his car. That is the premise for my round trip transit visa through Saudi Arabia.”
Mr Pedersen explained that the theme of his travel project is ‘A stranger is a Friend You’ve Never Met Before’ – adding that he plans to return to the UAE and Oman before heading towards Egypt and Jordan.
“I could have stayed at home, gone to the library, watched documentaries, spoken to people and explored the world from the comfort of a chair in familiar surroundings,” he said in his blog.
“This is a people project and nobody in history has ever reached every country all alone.”
