IN view of the continuous struggle against the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, I hope that the Bahrain government will also extend its support to expatriates, with regard to the waiving of electricity and water bills for the next three months.
Unlike Bahraini citizens, expatriate residents do not receive government support to ensure that their salaries are secured and paid on time; no bank loan payment extension; no housing privileges; no medical support; and no government allowance.
Instead, they lose their jobs at short notice; or get their salary reduced by as much as half the original amount, which is low to start with. In addition, finding jobs is much more difficult due to continued challenging business and economic conditions.
As a caring and humane government, it would indeed help struggling expatriates to cope with the current health and financial crises, if the kingdom were to consider including them in a further extension of utility subsidies.
