Top seed Malvika Bansod of India defeated Bulgaria’s Gergana Pavlova 21-8, 21-9 in their women’s round-of-16 match of the Al Sharif Group Bahrain International Challenge, being played at the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam.
In another women’s round-of-16 match yesterday, India’s Shivani Gadde upset second seed Jenjira Stadelmann of Switzerland 21-12, 21-16.
Other women’s singles encounters saw China’s Dai Wang outplaying India’s Keyura Mopati 21-8, 21-11 and Wu Luo Yu, also of China, seeing off Imad Farooqui Samiya of India 21-11, 21-8.
Meanwhile, the German pair of Jones Jansen and Thuc Nguyen beat local favourites Rohit Jayakumar and Diya Arun 21-66, 21-20 in the mixed doubles round of 16.
In the men’s singles, last year’s semi-finalist Gulshan Kumar defeated Japan’s Riki Taikei 21-8, 21-12.
Raghu Mariswamy of India marched on with an exciting 21-17, 10-21, 22-20 victory over China’s Liu Lang.
In the longest match of the day, which lasted one hour and 22 minutes, India’s Satish Karunakaran saw off compatriot Siddarth Pratap Singh 16-21, 21-19, 21-16.
Third seed Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian of India fought back to overcome Slovakia’s Milan Dratva 21-10, 15-21, 21-11.
In another upset of the day, men’s doubles GCC champions Munawar and Muanis beat India’s pair of Sumeeth Reddy and Asith Surya 16-21, 21-15, 21-19.
Bahrain’s duo Adnan Ebrahim and Ahmad Ajjad, meanwhile, lost in a closely fought match to Sri Lanka’s Oshamika Karunaratne and Thulith Palliyaguru 21-14, 20-22, 22-20.
