THIRTEEN years ago, I began my journey in the Middle East, where I was introduced to the holy month of Ramadan. From my initial experience in Qatar to my subsequent years in Bahrain, I have come to cherish and celebrate Ramadan as a Christian.
Here, I would like to share my personal journey and reflections, highlighting the beauty and significance of Ramadan from a non-Muslim perspective.
When I arrived in the Middle East in 2011, I was warmly embraced by the local community. Ramadan was deeply rooted in their culture, and I found myself fully immersed in an atmosphere of spirituality, unity and generosity. As a Christian, I quickly realised that Ramadan was not just a religious observance but also a time when the entire society came together to embody the values of compassion and self-reflection.
One of the most inspiring aspects of Ramadan is witnessing the dedication and commitment of Muslims to their faith. The discipline of fasting from dawn to sunset, the increased focus on prayer and recitation of the Quran, and the emphasis on acts of charity and kindness all leave a lasting impact. I found inspiration in the commitment and spiritual growth demonstrated by my Muslim friends and colleagues during this sacred month.
Ramadan provided me with a unique opportunity to witness the unity and harmony that surpass religious boundaries. Breaking fast together, sharing meals and participating in iftar gatherings fostered a sense of togetherness and acceptance. I was warmly welcomed into the homes of Muslim friends, where we exchanged stories, shared laughter and deepened our understanding of each other’s faiths. In these moments, I realised that Ramadan was not just a Muslim celebration but a celebration of humanity.
As Ramadan neared its end, the anticipation of Eid Al Fitr filled the air. The happiness and excitement that filled the streets were contagious, regardless of one’s religious background. I joined in the festivities, exchanging greetings and wishes with friends and strangers alike. The spirit of Eid, characterised by forgiveness, gratitude and celebration, touched my heart, reminding me of the shared values that unite us all.
Through my experiences during Ramadan, I have learned valuable lessons that have enriched my own spiritual journey. The emphasis on self-discipline, gratitude and acts of kindness has encouraged me to strive for personal growth and a deeper connection with my own faith. Ramadan has reminded me of the importance of generosity, compassion and the power of collective prayers which go beyond religious differences.
My 13-year journey celebrating Ramadan in the Middle East as a Christian has been a profound and transformative experience. The opportunity to witness and participate in this sacred month has allowed me to develop a greater appreciation for the beauty of diversity, the power of unity and the shared values that connect us all. Ramadan has become a time of personal reflection, spiritual growth and celebration, surpassing religious differences and fostering a deep sense of connection with the Muslim community.
I am grateful for the invaluable lessons and lasting friendships that Ramadan has granted me.
