His Majesty King Hamad, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has pardoned 1,584 inmates who have been convicted for riot and criminal cases.
The King issued a royal decree yesterday announcing the pardon, which marks the Silver Jubilee of his reign and the joyous occasion of Eid Al Fitr.
The royal decree reflects His Majesty’s keenness to maintain the cohesion and stability of the Bahraini society while protecting its social fabric, upholding public interest, safeguarding individual and civil rights, and adhering to the principles of justice, the rule of law, and the preservation of judicial independence, according to a statement.
It also aims to strike a balance between retribution and the humanitarian and social circumstances of the convicted inmates, it added.
The pardon offers the inmates the opportunity for positive re-integration into society, promoting the values of human rights in line with the kingdom’s approach in this regard.

The Cabinet commended His Majesty’s issuance of the decree and affirmed that this reflected the King’s commitment to maintain the cohesion and stability of Bahraini society.
Yesterday’s session, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, at Gudaibiya Palace, directed the Labour Ministry to provide training programmes and offer job opportunities to the pardoned individuals so that they can fulfil their social responsibility to contribute to the kingdom’s comprehensive development.
Ministers, senior officials, ambassadors and prominent personalities across Bahrain praised the royal gesture, saying it had brought joy to the hearts of the people. Among them were Parliament Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam, Shura Council Chairman Ali Saleh Al Saleh several ambassadors, Northern Governor Ali Al Asfoor, Bahrain Institute for Political Development board of trustees chairman Ali Al Rumaihi and Arab Parliament Speaker and Arab Observatory for Human Rights board of trustees chairman Adel Al Asoomi.
The National Institution for Human Rights president Ali Al Derazi said the decree offers the inmates the opportunity for re-integration into society.
