Dubai: Four Arab countries which cut ties with Qatar over its alleged support of terrorism yesterday designated dozens of people with alleged links to Qatar as terrorists, intensifying a row that threatens the region’s stability.
Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt said in a statement published by the Saudi news agency that 59 people, including Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Yousef Al Qaradawi, and 12 entities, among them Qatari-funded charities, were included in the list.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt included 59 figures and 12 entities linked to Qatar in their terrorist lists.
In a statement issued last night, the four countries stressed that the list serves suspicious agendas indicating Qatar’s double standards by declaring war on terrorism on the one hand and financing, backing and harbouring various terrorist organisations on the other hand.
The move reflects joint commitment of these countries to fighting terrorism, drying up its funding sources, combating radical thinking and tools used to disseminate it in order to eradicate and protect societies from it.
It also followed continual violations of obligations and agreements signed by Qatari authorities, including commitment not to support or shelter individuals or organisations threatening security of countries. Qatar also overlooked repeated calls to honour Riyadh Agreement signed in 2013, which endangered national security in the four countries as they were targets of destruction and chaos by individuals and terrorist organisations based in and supported by Qatar.
The list includes 18 Qataris, 26 Egyptians, five Libyans, two Jordanians, two Bahrainis, three Kuwaitis, one Emirati and one Saudi. It also includes five Qatari terrorist entities, six Bahraini and one Libyan.
