Bahraini drag racers shine as new world records set

Mon, 05 Mar 2018

Seven Bahrainis triumphed while three new world records were set during the fourth and penultimate round of the 2017/2018 Bahrain Drag Racing Championship, held this past weekend at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

A massive field of 170 participants in their cars and bikes took to BIC’s quarter-mile strip for an action-packed display of speed and grit. Amongst the local talents who emerged triumphant were Mohammed Al Jalahma, Faisal Majeed, Nawaf Al Manai, Mohamed Shakeeb, Ebrahim Khalil, Hani Hussain and Naser Al Kubaisi.

Three new world records were also set in the round before Race Day, two of which came in the Pro Mod category courtesy of Bahrain’s very own Khaled Mohammed. His first record of 5.379s came in the quarter-mile, while the other at 3.596s was in the eighth-mile.

Meanwhile, Robert Harber of UAE team Alpha Logic clocked a new world record time of 6.789s to become the fastest GT in the Outlaw 6-Clinder category.

On Race Day, Mohammed Al Jalahma came out victorious in the Street 4 and 6 category. He won with a pass of 9.387 seconds, beating countryman Ali Abdulla in the final. Abdulla was not far off with a time of 9.971s, but had to settle for the runner-up spot.

Faisal Majeed won in the Outlaw Front-Wheel-Drive (FWD) class with a run of 8.409s in the final, where he beat fellow-Bahraini Jassim Qamber.

Nawaf Al Manai followed suit in the Super Street 6-Cylinder category. Facing Mohamed Hussain of Saudi Arabia in the final, Al Manai produced a time of 7.102s, handily beating Hussain who had a mark of 8.591s.

Mohamed Shakeeb raced to a fine win in the Outlaw 6-Cylinder class. His time of 6.472s was enough to defeat compatriot Yousif Al Zayani, who had a pass of 7.186s.

Ebrahim Khalil was victorious in the Index 10.5 category, beating Kuwaiti runner-up Suliman Dawood. Hani Hussain did the same in the Index 8.5 class, where he overcame a tough challenge from Adnan Daif from Kuwait.

Mohammed Suliman was the top finisher in the Street V8 class. He registered a winning time of 7.510s, beating the 7.554s of Bahrain’s Salah Salahuddin.

Mohammed Qasem, also from Kuwait, won the Super Street V8 in a time of 5.197s, beating countryman Turki Khalid.

In the Pro Mod, Turki Al Humaidy was the winner, beating out Bahraini superstar Khaled Mohammed by the narrowest of margins. Al Humaidy had a fine run of 3.830s, while Mohammed’s final pass was 4.079s. Kuwait’s Fawaz Ebrahim clinched the Index 9.5 win ahead of Bahrain’s Khalid Abdulkrim.

In the other cars classes, Mohammed Bu Sylom of Saudi Arabia won the Competition 4.5 category with a time of 4.509s, beating Bahraini Ali Haji who had a 6.404s. His countryman Abdulla Al Shamsi won the Outlaw 10.5 class ahead of Kuwaiti Jaber Alajmi.
