This refers to ‘Beware sweeteners’ (GDN, April 13). Just like many other fads I wonder about the advice regarding no sugar.
Many years ago when Bahrain imported certain American fizzy drinks, one in particular called One Cal and another now very popular diet drink, those cans carried US government health warning on the aspartame contained therein.
People suffering from kidney problems were warned against using aspartame. Also not so long after there was a huge problem regarding particularly women becoming suicidal on One Cal because aspartame is a depressive.
Listed as the most dangerous substance on the planet I totally avoid aspartame.
A few years ago I discovered Stevitol and that made me very very ill after just using it in a cup of tea. Although it was listed as not harmful, after researching online I found it was.
Please please be aware, people, particularly children who are asthmatic may become ill after using these sweeteners.
It will be interesting to see how long the no sugar fad lasts, before someone else wakes up to the sweetener being harmful. Many diabetics I know would rather go without sweeteners altogether.
