New construction regulations have been set in a clampdown on violations in residential areas.
The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry co-ordinated the new rules with the Housing Ministry and municipal councils.
They will maintain the urban planning of residential areas while fast-tracking procedures for citizens.
Under the new regulations, municipal councils will be mandated to issue construction permits directly without referring them to the housing ministry, with a few exceptions.
“The new rules will provide councils with a solid legal tool to tackle construction violations,” said Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Minister Essam Khalaf.
Housing Minister Basem Al Hamer stressed the importance of the new guidelines in regulating extensions of housing units.
“The rules will preserve the architectural features of housing units in new residential towns,” he said.
He urged housing beneficiaries to regulate their situation in co-ordination with municipal authorities to avoid any measures.
