MANAMA: Bahrain yesterday welcomed the strong stance adopted by US President Donald Trump against Iran.
The Cabinet, chaired by His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, backed the firm US strategy, especially in the light of Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and sponsorship of radical and extremist groups in the Middle East.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, attended.
The Cabinet reiterated Bahrain’s full support for the strategy, which will reduce terrorist threats and enhance regional security.
US President Donald Trump earlier in the day told Iran it risked dire consequences “the like of which few throughout history have suffered before” if the Islamic Republic made more threats against the US.
His words, spelled out in capital letters in a Twitter message, came hours after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Trump that hostile policies toward Tehran could lead to “the mother of all wars.”
Trump’s comments come in the context of a barrage of speeches and online communications meant to pressure Iran to end its nuclear programme and its support of militant groups, according to US officials.
Iran has faced increased US pressure and possible sanctions since Trump’s decision in May to withdraw the US from a 2015 international agreement over Iran’s nuclear programme.
In his message directed at Rouhani, Trump wrote: “Never, ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered before. We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence & death. Be cautious!”
Shahin Gobadi, a member of the foreign affairs committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran said last night: “Rouhani’s remarks were total bluster and warmongering.
“We have stated time and again over the years that appeasing the clerical regime will simply embolden it to continue its malign activities and pursue its sinister objectives.
“Rouhani’s remarks once again unmistakably prove this reality pertaining to the very nature of the ruling theocracy.”
- Ministries and government departments have been directed to tighten their belts, reduce expenditure and develop revenues – in the short and medium term.
The Premier instructed them to submit their plans in this regard to the ministerial committee for financial affairs and rationalised spending.
