A MAJOR trade union has called for a rethink on the draft pension laws to protect pensioners’ rights.
The Bahrain Free Labour Unions Federation (Al Hurr) stressed the need to spare workers any additional financial burden or deprive them of any retirement privileges which are endorsed in the Constitution.
Al Hurr executive council chairman Yacoub Mohammed highlighted the need to protect social stability and avoid compromising pensioners’ rights.
He made the statement during his meeting with the Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel Humaidan.
He stressed the importance of the draft pension laws which have a direct effect on citizens’ living standards.
He stressed the need to engage trade unions in drafting bills of law and national legislation which have a direct impact on them, especially the draft pension laws which are still under study.
He stressed the need to protect pensioners’ rights and preserve the solvency strength and financial returns of pension funds to ensure their sustainability for future generations.
Mr Humaidan affirmed the leadership’s keenness to preserve labour rights and avoid any prejudice to pensioners’ privileges.
However, he said dialogue was the best option to reach consensual solutions accepted by all parties while protecting vital national interests.
