A pack of wild dogs killed more than a dozen hens outside a home in Sitra, the Bahraini owner has claimed.
Ali Abduladeeb Ali said the stray dogs entered his house on Thursday night as his son had forgotten to close the main gate.
They apparently ate all except five of the 15 hens, he told the GDN.
“We don’t make money out of hens; they were my children’s pets. They knew them since they were chicks and reared them with love.
“I was away from home when my son called me and started crying, saying there were dogs in the courtyard.
“I rushed home only to find all the hens killed.”
The 48-year-old retired Bahraini, who lives with his wife and four children in Mehzza, said stray dogs had become a menace in the area.
“I don’t want money for my hens, but need a solution to this stray dog issue.
“Last week, my son was chased by almost 20 such dogs when he was returning from school and wife had to rush to help.
“This happens to grown-ups as well – it is not safe to walk outside in the area at night.
“I really request someone to act on this growing concern.”
Following similar incidents in the past, councillors had last year called for stray dogs to be shot dead, claiming that the catch, neuter and release initiative had failed.
The Nationwide Dogs Help Scheme, which was launched in October 2016, was suspended amidst claims that only 83 of an estimated 30,000 stray dogs in Bahrain were caught in four months.
The companies tasked with implementing the campaign had expressed their inability to carry out the task and returned the cages used to catch the animals to the Southern Municipality.
