Crackdown on illegal power connections in Muscat

GDN Online Desk

Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC), has started an inspection campaign against illegal electricity connections by buildings and apartments in different areas of Muscat, Oman Daily reported.

The company has warned that illegal and unscientific electrical connections pose a risk to the building and its immediate neighbourhood of any electrical contact leading to large fires and losses to life and property.

MEDC said the power supply and installation of the meter are done purely on the basis taking into account the load capacity. Illegal connections bring extra load to the network and it may lead to incidents such as electrical fires.

The company said such practices are in violation of the regulations and laws of the company that guide its service to subscribers.

“Connecting electricity to homes under construction from nearby homes may endanger the residents of the area and expose you to legal liability. Instead, ask for a temporary electrical connection from the company branch in your area in Muscat,” the company added.
