Kuwait City - Total of 1251 cases of polygamy were authenticated over the past year in Kuwait, most of them Kuwaiti nationals.
According to figures released by The General Directorate of Statistics, 764 Kuwait men had already from one to three wives, when they took new brides.
A total of 1156 bridegrooms took their second wives in 2017 – of whom 689 were Kuwaitis and 467 expatriates living in Kuwait.
Eighty other men took their third wives last year – 62 Kuwaiti nationals and 18 non-Kuwaitis.
The statistics show that 15 men took their 4th wives – 13 Kuwaiti nationals and 2 expatriates living in Kuwait. In Islam, a man is allowed to marry up to four women.
