A MOROCCAN woman claims she bit two plainclothes policemen who entered her home to arrest her husband because she thought they were burglars.
The 38-year-old is accused of attacking officers who entered her home, in Hidd, with an arrest warrant for her Bahraini husband.
Her husband tried to flee through a window during the scuffle, but police managed to arrest both of them and they are now standing trial separately in the High Criminal Court.
“We had an arrest warrant for the man for selling drugs and we went to his home in Hidd,” one of the arresting officers, 28, said in his statement to prosecutors.
“Suddenly his wife started yelling at us and calling us drug addicts.
“She started throwing things at us, which we had to dodge.
“She attempted to distract us so her husband could escape through a window.
“The Moroccan woman then bit my hand and would not let go.
“Then she pushed me to the ground and started biting my legs.
“My colleague pushed her off me, but she started biting him as well.
“We then called for female backup and they wrestled her to the ground.
“We managed to arrest her husband before he could escape through a window.”
However, the woman denied charges of assaulting and insulting police when she appeared in court yesterday.
She claimed she was acting in self-defence and believed the plainclothes police who entered her home were burglars.
“I was only protecting myself,” she said in her statement to prosecutors. I only pushed the policemen away because they entered my house and I did not know who they were.
“I thought they were intruders. They claim they showed their ID, but this is not true.
“They were dressed in civilian clothes and I thought I was getting robbed.”
The woman’s trial has been adjourned until October 28 for review.
