BAHRAIN’s oldest private hospital is set to open a twin-hospital complex in A’ali as part of its ambitious expansion plans, it has emerged.
American Mission Hospital (AMH) is involved in a two-phased project in collaboration with a US-based healthcare organisation.
It includes a hospital dedicated to women and children, as well as a multi-speciality hospital on 20,000 square metres of land opposite Ramli Mall.
Phase one, which is the women and children’s hospital, is expected to commence early next year and is scheduled to be completed in two years, said AMH chief executive Dr George Cheriyan.
“The two-phased project is part of AMH’s expansion plans of our healthcare system,” he told the GDN.
“The first phase is a women and children’s hospital, which is expected to commence early next year.
“This is scheduled to be completed within two years on a 20,000sqm plot of land purchased by us in A’ali, opposite Ramli Mall.
“The second phase will be a multi-speciality hospital and the entire project is going to be built and run in collaboration with a US-based healthcare organisation.”
Dr Cheriyan highlighted the importance of the health of women and children globally, which he said was the reason for AMH’s decision to build a dedicated hospital.
“This has been our master plan over two phases, which will bring in more job opportunities for Bahrainis and others in the healthcare segment,” he added.
“Moreover, women and children’s healthcare is of high priority in most countries, which is an area that calls for focus due to its importance and sensitive nature.
“This is our reason for building a women and children’s hospital.
“We have been fully focused on this project, which will soon be officially announced and our aim is to serve the community better, retaining our legacy.”
Established by Christian missionaries in 1902, the first one-room clinic of AMH was in the Manama Suq and it later moved to the present location in Manama.
It has three buildings, set up in 1903, 1926 and 2000, of which the 1926 building is a dedicated clinic for women and children, which is also a cultural heritage building.
The hospital now has four branches including one in Manama, Riffa, Saar and Amwaj.
The latest medical and dental clinic in Riffa opened in March.
