A SERIES of lectures celebrating Manama started last night in conjunction with National Day celebrations.
The lecture, ‘Histories of Manama: City of Pearls and Oil’, was organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca) to celebrate the capital city.
Dr Nelida Fuccaro, a historian and professor of modern Middle Eastern history at the New York University, Abu Dhabi, has been studying Manama for the past two decades, monitoring its urban and cultural development.
She discussed the different aspects of Manama before and after the oil discovery, saying the capital city attracted many traders.
Underlining the significance of the pearling trade, she said Bahrain’s famous pearling families and Manama’s great diversity welcoming its visitors and foreign residents.
An collection of old photos of Manama was also showcased during the lecture.
