A MEDICAL report that will determine the cause of injuries suffered by a toddler, who was allegedly tortured by her own mother, will be submitted in two weeks.
The 26-year-old Jordanian woman is on trial at the High Criminal Court in connection with torturing her daughter, who was 14 months old at the time of the alleged assault, which caused internal bleeding, fractured shoulders and severe burns.
She appeared in court yesterday, where her defence team argued that the toddler suffered from internal bleeding caused by a “brain disease”.
“The child was born with a deformation to the head,” said one of the defence lawyers in court.
“She suffered internal bleeding as a result of the disease in her brain and not from a beating as prosecutors claim.
“The mother loves her child and will never harm her.
“We will provide the court with evidence of the toddler’s disease as proof.”
Judges adjourned the hearing to January 14 for the medical report to be submitted.
The woman, who has two other children, was arrested on March 6 last year when she allegedly poured boiling water on the toddler, leaving her with deformations of her private parts and lower body.
Denial
She previously denied charges of torture and child mistreatment, but a separate medical report said the child suffered continuous mistreatment that caused her injuries.
The husband, who previously gave evidence in court, said he never suspected his wife of abuse but was shocked when he uncovered burn marks and bruises on his daughter’s body.
