Bahrain has been given a quota of 4625 pilgrims for this year’s Haj season, the high committee for Haj and Umrah affairs said after a meeting chaired by Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa. The last to day to register through the electronic system is May 5. The committee called upon all licensed Haj contractors to comply with the regulations set by the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah. The Zakat and Charity Fund will launch a sponsorship scheme to help low income people perform the pilgrimage.
Health insurance set
The National Health Insurance programme will take effect officially next year. “The Cabinet will issue an edict detailing its executive procedures and phases,” Supreme Council for Health president Lieutenant General Dr Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa said yesterday. He said its first phase will be implemented on expatriates. A company has been hired to finalise details of the project. Dr Shaikh Mohammed said a royal decree will be issued to establish the Health Insurance Fund’s board. The Health Ministry will be in charge of executing plans set up by the council.
Bahraini hurt in crash
A Bahraini driver was injured in a traffic accident yesterday at 1.30pm in Isa Town.
He lost control and rammed into the metal barrier while trying to avoid hitting a car which entered his lane suddenly. His car was badly damaged.

Forum focus on Arabic language
The eighth international conference on Arabic language opened under the patronage of UAE Vice-President, Prime Minister and Dubai Ruler Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Senior officials and experts from many countries attended the conference during which winners of the fifth edition of the Mohammed bin Rashid Arab Language Award were honoured. Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi attended the first session on “Role of Arab and international organisations in promoting Arabic language” – along with senior officials representing Arab organisations. He commended efforts by the UAE in promoting the language and hailed the award as well as the Arab Reading Challenge.

The Education Ministry urged students wishing to join to submit their applications to their respective high schools. Candidates wishing to apply must be Bahraini nationals, a high school graduate with an accumulated average of at least 80 per cent. They must fill in the form on www.moe.gov.b and submit it along an ID photo, a copy of the passport, a copy of the smart card, grades report for the last term, a graduation bona fide and a certificate of good conduct.
