A PROMINENT lawyer has been arrested accused of spreading false news on Twitter.
Abdullah Hashim was remanded into custody for seven days yesterday when he appeared at the Public Prosecution to deny the charges.
“The defendant used his personal account on social media to spread falsified news to spread havoc,” Prosecutor Adnan Mattar said in a statement yesterday.
“The Public Prosecution confronted him with the tweets he posted a while ago.
“His comments were made to subvert security and cast doubt on authorities’ efforts to maintain security,” he added.
Bahrain Bar Society president Hassan Bedawi told the GDN he was following the case.
Meanwhile, Mr Hashim tweeted earlier yesterday that he was appearing at the Public Prosecution in connection with his tweets.
“I received a summons from the Public Prosecution where I will appear in connection with tweets I have posted,” he tweeted on his account @abdullahhashim2.
