Manama: A Boeing 747 passenger plane will be lowered into the sea off Bahrain’s coast this morning, signalling a landmark moment in the creation of the world’s largest eco-friendly underwater theme park.
Officials will attend the event at Diyar Al Muharraq at 8.30am.
A Press conference has also been lined up to outline the project, which is due to open to the public in August.
“We are proud to launch this unique eco-friendly project in co-operation with the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) and the private sector,” said Industry, Commerce, and tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani in a statement.
“The project is implemented in accordance with strict environmental standards and international best industry practices in the field of environmental sustainability, with an overall aim to revive the kingdom’s marine ecosystem and preserve its local marine environment.”
The underwater theme park will cover 100,000 square metres and include several dive spots, in addition to artificial coral reefs to attract marine life.
It is a collaborative effort between the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, the SCE and the private sector.
