AN Indian man who has reportedly committed suicide was found inside a shop in Muharraq.
Haris Abdul Hakim, a 32-year-old Indian man, was found yesterday hanging from a metal rod attached to the staircase inside Golden Goal Sports, where he worked.
He was seen in the morning outside the shop by witnesses and, according to informed sources, his friends had to break into the locked shop later in the afternoon where they found his body.
“We don’t know of any reason that could lead him to take such a drastic step,” said one of his friends who wished to remain anonymous.
“He was last seen in the morning near the shop and was happy.
“He went into the shop and later in the afternoon his friends found that he had locked himself inside the shop.
“They lived in the same building (of the shop), along with him and his uncle, and they broke the shutter to find him hanging.”
Mr Hakim from Kayamkulam, Kerala, is survived by his wife and a six-year-old son, who are back home.
Social workers confirmed that the formalities to repatriate the body were underway.
He has become the 26th person to have reportedly taken their own life in Bahrain so far this year, including 24 expatriates, of which 16 are Indians. This compares with 16 confirmed suicides among expatriates in 2017, a figure that rose to 37 in 2018.
The GDN reported last month that up to two calls a day were made to suicide helplines operated by the Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF), a volunteer group that set up the helplines amidst an alarming increase in suicides.
ICRF operates two suicide helplines (38415171/35990990), while other suicide hotlines include 35680258 and 38024189 by Pravasi (Expatriates) Guidance Forum; 33882835 and 38459422 by Palisha Virudha Samithi (Committee Against Interest) and 33421660 and 36253753 by the Nepali Club.
