Paris: The seventh award ceremony of Unesco King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICTs) in Education was held yesterday, highlighting Bahrain’s commitment towards encouraging global initiatives in education.
His Majesty King Hamad assigned Deputy Premier Shaikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa to attend the event, which was held at the Unesco headquarters in co-operation with the Ministry of Education.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including Unesco Director-General Irina Bokova and Education Minister Dr Majid Al Nuaimi.
Addressing the event, Shaikh Mohammed highlighted Bahrain’s outstanding strides in the field of education, which enabled the kingdom to secure advanced ranks in human development indices.
He stressed the educational opportunities for both sexes, pointing out that Bahrain has achieved hundred per cent in
primary education.
Lauding the King’s initiative, Ms Bokova emphasised the positive impact of the award, since its inception, in encouraging the use of telecommunications and information technologies in promoting education.
She congratulated the winners of the 2015 award and stressed the Unesco 2030 Strategy, which focuses
on promoting quality education.
Singapore Ministry of Education and Costa Rican Omar Dengo Foundation shared the award for “Open Source Physics” project and “National Programme of Educational Informatics Foundation”
project, respectively.
The number of entries more than doubled compared with past years as a total of 112 projects from 58 countries and a number of NGOs were
nominated for the 2015 award.
