A BAHRAIN resident who committed suicide in Kerala was reportedly under heavy debts, it has emerged.
Indian Joshi Varghese, who was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room at a resort in Wayanad on Tuesday, had left behind a suicide note citing financial difficulties.
The 45-year-old worked as transport co-ordinator at the Indian School Bahrain.
According to his brother-in-law Linson Chacko, Mr Varghese arrived in Kerala last week, but did not go to his house in Thrissur.
He said the family was still trying to come to terms with the shock of hearing from police in Wayanad, a district further north, about the death.
“Police informed us on Tuesday about the death and they did a postmortem the next day,” Mr Chacko told the GDN yesterday.
“Apparently, there was a suicide note that said he was in heavy debt with many in Bahrain.
“His family had helped him financially to settle part of his debts in the past, but he still had a lot more to clear.”
Mr Varghese’s wife, Fincy, 35, a school teacher in Bahrain, did not accompany him to Kerala.
She travelled to India on Thursday for the funeral.
“We didn’t even know that he came to Kerala,” added Mr Chacko.
Travelled
“Now we learn that he reached Trivandrum early last week and went straight to the resort.
“He was reportedly there for two nights before he hanged himself from a fan in his room.
“The resort employees found him.”
The couple have no children.
There has been 26 confirmed suicides among expatriates in Bahrain since the start of the year.
This compares to 16 suicides in 2017, a figure that rose to 37 in 2018.
