AN investigation has been launched after 64 cases of food poisoning at ma’tams were reported yesterday.
The Health Ministry said 56 cases were reported at a ma’tam in Muharraq after Ashoora rituals.
“Several cases of food poisoning were registered by the Health Ministry right after Ashoora rituals in a ma’tam in Muharraq,” said a statement.
“Cases were received by the Muharraq Health Centre and the King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH), with 56 cases in total so far,” it added.
Informed sources at the KHUH told the GDN last night that the hospital received 28 patients but 27 of them were discharged after treatment. “None of the cases were serious but a girl has been admitted,” said the source.
Primary healthcare assistant under-secretary Dr Manal Al Alawi, however, reported eight more food poisoning cases. Five were admitted to North Muharraq Health Centre and three to Mohammed Jassim Kanoo Health Centre, Hamad Town.
Food control section specialists took necessary measures and referred the incident to the Public Prosecution.
The Interior Ministry said on its Twitter account that an investigation has been launched in co-ordination with the Muharraq Police Directorate.
