An academic project aimed at encouraging high school students to specialise in scientific subjects is set to be launched this year.
The Higher Education Council (HEC) is co-ordinating the scheme with the Education Ministry’s Secondary Education Directorate and Clever Play.
“The initiative seeks to encourage high school students to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM)”, said HEC scientific research director Dr Farzana Al Maraghi.
The project is part of the ministry’s strategy to foster the culture of scientific research among students at the pre-university level.
The programme includes workshops and lectures designed to target Grade X students who are enrolled in the unified stream.
It will first be implemented in eight secondary schools for boys and girls, on the basis of two establishments per governorate. The focus will be mainly on building and programming robots, engineering, computer coding and programming, space sciences and design thinking.
