CAIRO: Iran’s continued role in destabilising regional security was condemned at a meeting of key Arab foreign ministers yesterday.
The ministers from the Arab Quartet – Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt – and Arab League secretary general Ahmed Aboul Gheit also condemned a hostile and inciting speech by an Hizbollah official in Lebanon earlier in the day.
The Arab Quartet committee on the follow up to the crisis with Iran was meeting at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital on the sidelines of a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers.
Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa took part in both the meetings.
The Hizbollah official’s speech contained “reprehensible abuses” against Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen, the ministers pointed out.
They also condemned the official’s exploitation of a religious occasion that must be respected.
This constitutes a blatant interference in internal affairs of other nations and adds to the dangerous role Hizbollah plays in helping facilitate Iran’s role in destabilising the region, the ministers pointed out.
They called on the Lebanese government to condemn these statements.
The ministerial committee of the Quartet also denounced the continued Iranian interference in the internal affairs of Bahrain, and its malign role in supporting terrorism, training and harbouring terrorists, stirring up sectarian strife and its ongoing hostile statements to destabilise the kingdom’s security. The committee welcomed the decision by several countries to proscribe Iran-based Al Ashtar Brigades as a terrorist organisation.
