Bahrain is home to 51 new islands, some of them artificial, says a marine environmental scientist.
Dr Mohammed Al Romaidh said that the kingdom’s mainland area has increased by 18 per cent between 1964 and 2016 due to land reclamation.
The number of islands has gone up from 33 natural islands to 84 natural and artificial islands, he said.
During a presentation at a symposium, ‘Sea sand extraction ... necessity and risks’, he also outlined how illegal land reclamation has destroyed rare wildlife species and damaged fisheries resources in the country.
