This is regarding the letter “No excuses…” (GDN, September 29), from Jean.
Why shouldn’t overweight people be able to buy nice clothes that actually fit? It’s concerning that so many people get angry at seeing other people being overweight. Let’s hope that it is out of genuine concern for people’s health, rather than of being judgmental, or some deeper psychological issue.
It’s important to point out that fat shaming doesn’t work. It does add to stress and anxiety. There probably isn’t an overweight person who isn’t aware of the risks of being overweight. Everyone should adopt healthy habits, both with food and activities. Normal-weight people can be just as lazy, and just as addicted to TV, tablets, and cell-phones as overweight people.
Sitting for long periods is unhealthy for everyone. Sodas and processed foods are unhealthy for everyone. Dieting can increase health risks for anyone and it can undermine weight-loss.
It is especially challenging in Bahrain to get adequate physical activity because of the weather, and because there are not a lot of places to walk to. One needs to go to a place to walk, so that is limiting for many people.
The good news is that any activity that gets you moving, such as gardening, or house cleaning, provides some health benefits.
Recognize that some medical issues, medications, and disabilities can impact weight and activity levels.
Let’s focus on finding and promoting healthy habits and activities that work for people, rather than shaming them.
