The letter ‘No excuses...’ (GDN, September 29) said, “But until we start telling the truth, this problem will escalate.” Fat-shaming/body shaming includes condemning someone’s diet, attire and lifestyle choices, as well as openly disparaging them and denying their autonomy. That is what the writer, Jean, did. It is clear that the writer’s disgust is directed towards overweight women. When people complain about “overweight people”, they are rarely referring to men. While there is quite an abundance of overweight men in every level of business and society here in Bahrain, they are not the ones being called lazy. The truth is that fat-shaming is just another branch of misogyny.
