Shura Council’s services committee has approved a draft law exempting employers from bearing the cost of deportation of runaway expatriate workers.
Expatriate workers who run away from their employers, in violation of work permit regulations, will have to bear the expenses related to their deportation to their country of citizenship, said the committee in its report to be presented to the council at Sunday’s session.
If the runaway happens to die, expenses related to repatriation of the body will be borne by members of his family, if they so request within a maximum of 30 days from the date of his death, the committee said, according to a report in our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej. The bill aims to protect employers from incurring losses resulting from the dramatic increase in the number of illegal workers recently, it added.
