I BELIEVE most of our readers have noticed it. The increasing drug related news splashed in our dailies. Smugglers detained and sentenced, passengers caught with kilos of illegal drugs... Such topics have almost become a daily take of our news outlets.
Most of the drug smugglers either come through the causeway or arrive at Bahrain International Airport. Either way, these people appear to understand the item they carried and its value in the market.
However, knowingly or unknowingly, the smugglers have ignored its impact on our social fabric. The family breakdowns and the death of people it can cause, the future of innocent youths it shutters, and the families and society that suffered.
Irrespective of the efficiency of the customs services, drug dealers are still caught either using or peddling them. This poses a serious challenge to our society and the youths in particular.
The problem is global. However, Bahrain is a small island and this makes drug control easier than other large countries. Thus, if public participation in curbing drugs is increased by intensifying awareness campaigns and referring suspected users or peddlers to police, a remarkable outcome can be achieved.
Smugglers will not cease from trying to illegally bring drugs to any destination around the world, irrespective of the number of their foot soldiers or drug mules caught, detained or executed. Customs officers will try to employ hi-tech equipment to trace the drugs and detain the perpetrators. This process will continue unabated.
The solution is increasing public involvement through awareness about the prevention of illegal drug use and consumption.
