A HIGH-LEVEL meeting reviewing the progress of Manama Suq also discussed installation of WiFi, changing storefronts and signage, restoration of façades of old buildings, etc.
These efforts are really laudable. Renovation of Manama Suq is a development aimed at preservation of our historical heritage, to benefit business, enhance tourism, ultimately making healthier the national economy.
However, it would have been better if the authorities had at the same time made the public aware of the national benefits achieved through earlier renovation and changing store fronts, glassed roofing etc of the portion of the main commercial area housing then big business concerns like General ACs, a mega store selling small agricultural equipment? One whole part of the market housing then mainly electronic shops etc now stands in beautiful food outlets with nice sittings. I am sure more tourists must be coming to visit this area.
One thing puzzles me. Today everyone, even the lowest paid expatriate casual labourer has a “mobile package” in his costly or cheap phone and his fingers are busy while walking, shopping, consulting a doctor on WhatsApp or Facebook due to his device connected to Internet. Who will use this WiFi installed in the market? Would market visitors switch off their own Internet connections to enjoy the market’s WiFi facility?
