An MP today urged the Labour and Social Development Minister to quit if he couldn’t control the labour market.
Parliament was debating amendments to the 2006 Labour Market Regulatory Set-up Law during its weekly session.
Hamad Al Kooheji accused Minister Jameel Humaidan of remaining silent on controversial statements made by a prominent Bahraini businessman who said that Bahrainis refused to work in certain jobs forcing companies to hire expatriates.
However, MP Adel Al Asoomi said parliament needed to look past the minister to solve the unemployment problem.
"We need to be more clear if we want to solve the unemployment problem or not," he said.
"We need to look past the minister and look at the large corporations which are still hiring expatriates.
"These large corporations and banks aren't under the control of the minister and he has no authority over them."
This prompted Mr Al Kooheji to say, "He should resign.”
After a lengthy debate that lasted more than two hours parliament approved the proposal which will now be referred to the Shura Council.
