A WOMAN who allegedly tried to smuggle drugs worth more than BD30,000 into Bahrain stashed in her underwear has pleaded for forgiveness on the grounds of being elderly.
The 49-year-old Thai mother was arrested at Bahrain International Airport on October 23 last year as she tried to enter the country with 50 pills and 200gm of crystal meth, known locally as shabu.
The narcotics were stuffed inside condoms hidden in the underwear she was wearing.
A policewoman found the drugs during a strip search after officers became suspicious of the passenger’s behaviour.
The defendant appeared at the High Criminal Court and pleaded not guilty.
She handed a letter to the leading judge requesting her release from custody as she was old.
“I regret what I have done and I am sorry,” she said in the letter attached to court documents.
“I am an elderly woman and request you to forgive me; I suffer from several illnesses and want to return to my country.
“I brought the drugs, which I have been using for a long time, for my personal use.”
