BAHRAINIS who have provided meritorious service to the country could be provided government homes under an urgent proposal approved unanimously by MPs yesterday.
Under the proposal, which will now be reviewed by the Cabinet, those Bahrainis should be given homes immediately in case of sickness or injury preventing them from continuing to work, and to their families shortly after their death.
However, the issue sparked a heated debate between acting parliament chairman Ali Al Zayed and public utilities and environment affairs committee chairman Hamad Al Kooheji over claims that comments were irrelevant to the subject.
“Don’t interrupt me and don’t silence me or stop me,” shouted Mr Al Kooheji repeatedly as Mr Al Zayed tried to reason with him.
“The BD100 monthly housing allowance given after five years of wait is not enough to rent a Toyota Corolla,” he said.

“The late renowned actor Ali Al Ghurair who died on Sunday should have been given a home and not an apartment as he waited for two decades to get off the waiting lists.
“Mr Al Ghurair was one of many artistes, media personnel and academics who deserve better as well as players who officials run to take selfies with following some achievement but then promptly forget about them.”
Mr Al Kooheji said military personnel injured in the line of duty should also be included in a proposal approved two weeks ago to provide homes to the family of martyrs.
MP Ahmed Al Amer said Bahrainis who have provided meritorious service to the nation deserve much more than just a house.
MPs also approved proposals to halt raising the monthly housing instalments if the income of the beneficiary rises and another for citizens who receive property through inheritance to be still eligible for housing services.
