HASHIM Al Toobli was among the winning players yesterday on the opening day of the eighth EK Kanoo Juniors Open Tennis Championship 2020 at Bahrain Tennis Club (BTC) in Juffair.
Al Toobli won his first round match in the under-12 boys’ singles after coming from behind from a set down to beat Ritwik Bhat 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 in a super tie-break.
Hashim was joined in the next round of play by Pranesh Jayachandran, who also needed a super tie-break to defeat Hussain Jalil Haji 7-5, 5-7, 10-7.
Elswhere on day one, Adrian Cifra was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Ali Ghazi Ali Isa, while Javier Montes defeated Joe Elkara 6-0, 6-0.
Haydar Al Fareed defeated Faisal Maseeh 6-1, 6-1 to go through, as did Rayyan Ahmed, who beat Ahmed Murtadha 6-0, 6-0.
Abdulrazzaq Al Henabi won against Redha Hasan Abdulnabi, who retired from the match in the second set with Abdulrazzaq leading 6-4, 3-0; while Ahmed Badr and Rion Jay both won via walkover against Ali Al Khamees and Joshua Wang, respectively.
The tournament is being held under the patronage of Ebrahim K Kanoo Vice-Chairman Fuad Ebrahim Kanoo. There are eight categories in all in the tournament. Aside from the under-12 boys’ singles, there are also the under-14 boys’ singles, under-16 boys’ singles, under-12 boys’ doubles, under-12 girls’ singles, under-16 girls’ singles, the unisex 6 and 8, and the unisex 9 and 10.
