In the newly-opened Kuttanadan Thattukada all the spices and masala mixes used are specially dried – locking in the local flavour.
On the menu are a variety of desi starters like crab green pepper tawa, prawns kombil korthathu, koonthal red chilli fry and much more such as soups like Tom Yum Soup, hot and sour sea food soup and others giving guests a break from the Chinese and continental tastes they are used to.
You can start with a thick duck egg omelet, fleshy and soft while the main course includes everything found inside a Kuttanadan kitchen such as appam, thattu dosa, Kerala paratha, puttu, kappa and rice and may also include kakka thoran, natholi peera, and Kallummekaya roast and more.
The restaurant specialises in duck as the Kuttanadan duck roast comes with a delicious gravy which is smooth and spicy.
Like most of the dishes, this is also seasoned with pepper – a stable ingredient in Kuttanadan recipes.
If you are comfortable with the tough duck flesh you can opt for duck roast, pal curry, fry, varutharachathu or ularthiyathu.
Otherwise, there are smart options in chicken and mutton such as chicken mappas or mutton roast.
For a true ethnic tryst you can try the soft and fragrant puttu cooked inside a coconut shell, since rice is something Kuttanadan cuisine can’t do without.
