AMENDMENTS that would have granted more privileges to the unemployed have been rejected by the Shura Council.
It said in its vote yesterday that the amendments to the 2006 Insurance against Unemployment Law were redundant as jobless Bahrainis received increased benefits last year.
Parliament and Shura Council Affairs Minister Ghanim Al Buainain said a royal decree issued by His Majesty King Hamad in May last year granted unemployed Bahrainis more benefits, whether by increasing allowances or increasing the period of allowance.
Meanwhile, a new legislation that would oblige the government to take into consideration water channels on maps was approved by the Shura Council.
Debate on amendments to the 1994 Urban Planning Law were suspended by Shura in November to seek further clarification on the definition of water channels ‘towards the water’ or ‘inside the water’, despite agreeing at the time on the importance of the legislation.
The amendments have been approved by Parliament and backed by the government, which said the indication of water channels comes in line with allocation of historic, municipal, industrial and other use tags for plots on maps.
However, it will be returned to MPs for a second review as Shura added natural reservations to the tags.
