Abu Dhabi: An Emirati female biker has filed defamation and cyber crime case against 35 people for threatening and insulting her and husband Salem Al Muraikhi online.
Nadia Hussain caused an internet sensation last month when she climbed aboard Harley-Davidson motorcycle festooned with flowers and netting to celebrate her wedding with her biker friends.
They roared off from Al Raha Beach Hotel in Abu Dhabi with more than 60 bikers joining them in their celebration.
However, they were threatened by people for disturbing the public order as Nadia Hussain was accused of acting in a manner that contradicted UAE traditions and values, and for breaking the rules of hijab with her outfit.
According to Nadia, she said was subjected to death threats and insults from social media commentators since her wedding.
According to a report in The National, the couple had to cancel their honeymoon to the Seychelles because they could not leave their Dubai hotel room after their wedding night.
“There were threats saying they will slit our throats, and phrases like, ‘Let me only see them in the street and I will run them over’.
“And our phones never stopped ringing," said Ms Hussain.
Ali Al Mansouri, a lawyer representing one of the accused, said the complaints were filed under defamation in the penal code and other offences under cyber crime law.
He further said the defence would centre on whether Ms Hussain’s actions were an affront to public decency and order.
The case will be heard at the Court of Misdemeanours where two of the accused, already referred to the Public Prosecution, will be present for first hearing on April 17.
