A WOMAN who smuggled large amounts of narcotics into the country in her undergarments has been jailed for 10 years.
The 35-year-old Bahraini is part of an alleged major drug trafficking ring that smuggled hashish into Bahrain from Saudi Arabia.
She was arrested on King Fahad Causeway in her latest attempt in September last year when a sniffer dog detected 200gm of hashish in her undergarments.
In addition to the jail sentence, the High Criminal Court also fined the woman BD5,000 yesterday.
A Bahraini man, aged 40, who is said to have headed the illicit ring, was also jailed for 10 years and fined BD5,000.
However, a third defendant was found not guilty of smuggling narcotics but was jailed for six months for using hashish.
“The defendants were found guilty of the charges due to sufficient evidence against them,” read the court ruling.
“The male defendant (aged 40) who headed the drug trafficking ring told his female accomplice to smuggle drugs into the country in her undergarments.
“He told her to meet a Saudi man, unknown to authorities, and buy drugs from him before smuggling the hashish into Bahrain via King Fahad Causeway.
“However, she was arrested when a K9 dog found the narcotics in her undergarments.”
The woman’s brother, who was in court yesterday when a leading judge read out the ruling, broke down in tears and said his sister was not caught dealing.
“I do not know how to tell my mother; she might have a heart attack,” he told policemen outside the courtroom.
