A MAN who is reportedly suffering from schizophrenia and tried to flee while in custody for allegedly assaulting a policeman has been admitted to the Psychiatric Hospital.
The 32-year-old Bahraini was arrested for assault on October 6 last year but had to be taken to Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC) as he was suffering from the disorder.
A 40-year-old policeman said the defendant punched and kicked him as he tried to flee from custody at the SMC.
A defence lawyer previously requested judges to send her client to the Psychiatric Hospital for a mental evaluation. A report submitted to the High Criminal Court said the defendant was not responsible for his actions as he suffered from schizophrenia.
Judges ruled the defendant could not be held accountable for his actions and referred him to the Psychiatric Hospital for treatment.
