A MAN who brutally beat up a nurse on a busy street as she walked home from work was trying to snatch her bag, according to the Public Prosecution.
However, he was foiled in his attempt as the Indian woman resisted him and cried for help.
The GDN reported on Wednesday that the 32-year-old woman, who works at Salmaniya Medical Complex (SMC), was attacked on Tuesday at around 10.30pm.
The 29-year-old man of Asian origin was arrested and charged with attempted theft and assault.
He told prosecutors that he was trying to mug the woman but failed to do so when she resisted him and alerted passers-by.
He will now stand trial.
“The Public Prosecution carried out investigations in connection with an Asian man attacking a nurse in the street,” said Capital Governorate Public Prosecution head Mohammed Salah in a statement yesterday.
“The suspect was arrested and he admitted to prosecutors that he attempted to carry out a mugging but failed to do so when the victim resisted him and called for help from passers-by.
“He said he attempted to snatch her handbag.
“He was charged with attempted theft and assault.”
The GDN previously reported that CCTV footage from a nearby shop, located on the road leading to St Mary’s Orthodox Church, showed the man closely following the woman for a short distance before suddenly lunging at her and pushing her to the ground.
The man is then seen viciously beating her and bashing her head on the ground before grabbing her by the hair and throwing her against a parked pickup truck.
He flees the scene when the woman manages to scream and passers-by run to her aid.
The woman exclusively told the GDN at the time that she suffered injuries to her abdomen and chest, while stressing that she did not recognise the man or his motive.
She was treated at the SMC accident and emergency department following the attack and has since been discharged.
The woman, who hails from Kerala, has been living in Bahrain with her husband since 2012.
