A TOTAL of 647 palm trees were planted in Tubli Farm as part of efforts to increase the palm tree population in Bahrain and to elevate the agricultural sector’s contribution to food security.
The trees were transferred from Hawrat A’ali and replanted in Tubli Farm within a larger scale plan to plant almost 2,000 palm trees in Tubli.
Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry Agriculture and Marine Resources Under-Secretary Dr Nabeel Abu Al Fateh yesterday revealed the completion of the tender for the transfer of 687 palm trees from Hawrat A’ali to Tubli Farm.
“The assigned company was instructed to transfer and replant 647 palm trees in a coordinated and systematic engineering manner, taking into account the scientific dimensions between each palm tree,” he said in a statement.
“An inventory will be made in the coming period to identify the names of the different varieties in addition to transferring 40 palm trees to be replanted at Awali Hospital.
“These efforts aim to plant 1,767 palm trees in Tubli Farm where an irrigation network has been fully installed to provide water to the planted palm trees.”
Dr Abu Al Fateh also said that work has started on transferring palm tree tissues for cultivation from the greenhouse at the Plant Production Department, while a number of ground-ponds in the nursery were set up for the transfer and cultivation of 411 seedlings.
He also revealed that a total of 3,958 seedlings were cultivated in the palm tree nursery, adding that planting various species of palm trees are within the ministry’s strategic plans.
“This initiative comes within a range of programmes aimed at enhancing and elevating the kingdom’s agricultural sector and ensuring its contribution to Bahrain’s food security,” added Dr Abu Al Fateh.
