Bahrain is providing crucial “logistical support” to US forces combating Islamic State (IS).

US Secretary of State John Kerry said Bahrain was a key partner in the 60-nation coalition against IS, also known as Daesh or ISIL.

Bahrain has been taking part in the US-led airstrikes against the IS, called Operation Inherent Resolve, since it launched in 2014.

“Bahrain is a critical security partner of the United States,” said Mr Kerry.

“It is an ongoing fight against terrorist groups especially Daesh and we are fighting the same enemy in Riyadh, Lahore, Brussels, Mumbai and Mali.

“Bahrain backs up that statement by providing valuable operation and logistic support to the counter Daesh coalition.”

Mr Kerry, who is on his first visit to Bahrain, said the fight against terror was the “centrepiece of discussions” during a GCC ministerial meeting, which was held yesterday.

“This is a critical mission for US and Bahrain as we stand side by side,” he added.

“Bahrain is playing a key role in maritime security and providing logistical support to Navcent (United States Naval Forces Central Command and the Fifth Fleet).”

He was speaking during a Press conference held yesterday at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay with Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, who said the coalition was winning the war against the terrorist group.

“We are encouraged by the loss of (their) territory in the fight to confront Daesh,” said Shaikh Khalid.

“The tides have turned against Daesh.

“We need to redouble our efforts for the final defeat of Daesh by stopping their flow of funds.

“Bahrain has always been at the forefront of combating terrorist financing.”
