Bahrain: A LECTURE by a Nobel Peace Prize nominee and acclaimed Palestinian author and doctor will be held in Bahrain tonight.
Conflict resolution expert Dr Izzeldin Abuelaish will speak about the need to balance reason and emotion to achieve peace.
He was the first Palestinian doctor to receive a staff position in an Israeli hospital, where he treated both Israeli and Palestinian patients.
However, his three daughters aged 13 to 21 were killed when his house was shelled by an Israeli tank during the Gaza conflict in 2009. The tragedy spurred him to work towards reconciliation between the two sides and he founded the Daughters for Life Foundation in their memory.
The organisation provides scholarships to encourage young women to pursue their studies at universities in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt and Syria.
He also wrote the internationally best-selling book I Shall Not Hate, which has been translated into 18 languages and has been referenced by US President Barack Obama and former US President Jimmy Carter.
The event is organised by the Bahrain Foundation for Reconciliation and Civil Discourse and will take place at 7.30pm in the Al Ayam Media Centre, in Janabiya.
