MORE than 400 migrant workers in Bahrain are among those who tested positive for the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) to date.
In the latest tally, 94 of the 96 positive cases registered in the country yesterday were foreign workers.
The remaining two contracted the virus from abroad.
The cases among migrant workers were being monitored as part of a proactive campaign launched in labour camps across Bahrain, according to the Health Ministry.
“Laboratory tests were conducted on all cases and necessary measures have been taken to isolate them for treatment and their contacts to be quarantined,” added the ministry.
“The men (migrant workers) did not leave their housing (during the tests) as part of precautionary measures taken by the government to ensure the health and safety of all citizens and residents.”
The GDN reported last week that 144 men from a labour camp in Salmabad tested positive in three batches.
A total of 400 employees of the cleaning company were earlier housed in their camp after two of them tested positive on March 13. The first lot of 47 men tested positive in the camp on April 1 and they were moved to the quarantine facility in Sitra.
Another 66 men tested positive at the Sitra facility the next day, while yet another 31 tested positive on April 7.
On the same day, 41 expatriate men at a labour accommodation in Hidd tested positive. They were already in self-isolation and were transferred to the Sitra facility.
Two days later, last Thursday, 44 cases were reported amongst migrant labourers, with another 12 testing positive on Friday. On Saturday, 72 expat labourers tested positive.
The ministry also announced last week that 16 Bangladeshi men had contracted the virus from one man who was found infected during the ministry’s random sample testing in Manama.
Meanwhile, three more people were discharged from treatment and isolation centres yesterday, taking the total number of recoveries to 558.
There are currently 572 active cases of which four are in critical condition.
So far, six patients, all Bahraini nationals, have died in Bahrain.
The total number of people tested in the country has now reached 63,973.
Meanwhile, 38 more people left quarantine facilities after completing the mandatory 14-day stay. Laboratory tests on these people were negative clearing them of infection. This takes the total number of people to leave the quarantine facilities to 669.
