Bahrain: An arson attack on a Bahraini policeman’s car was orchestrated from Iran, a court heard.
Three Bahrainis, aged 18, 19 and 21, have been arrested in connection with the attack, which took place outside the officer’s Hamad Town home shortly after midnight on February 6.
All three denied arson, possessing Molotov cocktails, damaging private property and taking part in an illegal gathering when they appeared before a remand judge yesterday.
However, one of them earlier told prosecutors that the attack was ordered by an unnamed controller in Iran.
“I got a message on my BlackBerry from my friend,” the 21-year-old Bahraini said in his statement.
“He told me an unknown man in Iran instructed him to tell us to carry out an attack against a policeman, who he said was working for the intelligence services.”
However, he said that after obtaining petrol canisters his friend, 19, came back to Bahrain and carried out the arson attack.
“Our friend said he would come back to Bahrain and carry out the attack himself,” said the 21-year-old.
“He came on February 5 and the following day sent us a picture of the burnt car.
“He said he carried out the mission and I sent photos and video to the unknown man in Iran.”
All three were remanded in custody for 15 days yesterday while investigations continue.
