Tougher punishments could be introduced under new amendments that would criminalise stocking or overpricing of products.
The amendments to the 2012 Consumer Protection Law were recommended by the Shura Council financial and economic affairs committee yesterday and spearheaded by committee chairman Khalid Al Maskati. Under it, the violating business would be shut down for three months for the first offence and six months if the offence is repeated.
The same punishment will be enforced on those hindering inspectors.
The move follows several cases in which vegetables and food staples were found hidden in warehouses.
